Understanding the Psychological Variables of CrossFit Participants

CrossFit has become a popular form of exercise, with millions of enthusiasts worldwide. While many people participate in CrossFit for various reasons, such as enjoyment, challenge, and affiliation, there are also psychological variables that play a crucial role in adherence and maintenance of the practice. In this article, we will explore the key findings from a recent review of 34 studies on the psychological variables of CrossFit participants.

The quality assessment demonstrated the need for more detail in the methods section of future investigations. However, despite this limitation, the studies reviewed provided valuable insights into the psychological factors that influence CrossFit participation.

One of the most significant findings was the high perception of effort among CrossFit participants. This suggests that individuals who participate in CrossFit are highly motivated and committed to their exercise routine. Additionally, the studies found that intrinsic motivation, reasons for practice, and psychological needs such as enjoyment, challenge, and affiliation were all important factors in predicting adherence and maintenance of CrossFit.

The review also examined the relationship between reaction time and mental health outcomes after a CrossFit session. While some studies found impaired reaction times, others found no significant changes in mental health, self-esteem, or well-being. However, overall, the findings suggest that CrossFit participation is associated with improved psychological outcomes.

Another key finding was the increase in satisfaction, clinical addiction, and enjoyment among participants related to exercise, social improvement, and high intrinsic motivation to participate for the purpose of enjoyment, challenge, and affiliation.

To conduct this review, researchers searched six electronic databases (SCOPUS, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Cochrane) from their inception through July 2020. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the PRISMA guidelines, and the review is documented in the PROSPERO registry (CRD42018091177).

In conclusion, this review highlights the importance of psychological variables such as motivation, satisfaction, and basic psychological needs in predicting adherence and maintenance of CrossFit. The findings suggest that CrossFit participation can have positive effects on mental health outcomes and overall well-being.
